In the Malaysian Institute of Architects (PAM) Awards 2009, this stunning creation was the only one to be featured twice — once, as the winner of the PAM Architectural Steel Awards 2009, and as a honourary mention for the single residential category in the general awards section.
Lauded by the jury for its “daring approach” in designing a home emphasising the interaction of spaces, the M+M House, named for its owners, was also praised for allowing a “well-considered response to the climate without resorting to conventional tropical domestic form”.
Built around the idea of a traditional Sarawak longhouse and designed to fit the needs of the multi-generational families of the two friends that share an acre of land near the Kuching International Airport, the house was designed and built by the owners themselves.
Architect Mike Boon and his friend Tan Swee Meng each own one of the two identical residential buildings, which can be sub-divided into semi-detached houses with a shared garden compound. Each house consists of three linear key spaces in parallel order -- much like a traditional longhouse.
With its partially-shaded open deck, covered veranda and private spaces stacked above the living area, materials like concrete, metal, timber, brick and glass were brought together to produce a minimalist and natural look to the house.
In keeping with the theme of open spaces and communal living, the prevailing empty spaces were meant for gatherings of people and for serenity when empty. There is even a communal studio space on the deck where performances and presentations can be held.
The two friends also ensured natural light and ventilation would be fully utilised in the house while providing security and privacy. The house also has a long pond to help cool the air in the living areas on the ground floor.
Using a play on angles, light and shadow, the remarkable house challenges the traditional concept of living in a way that is fun and versatile while maintaining individuality and privacy.
