KUALA LUMPUR: Winners of the recent FIABCI Prix d'Excellence Awards 2010 received their awards at the 61st World Congress of the International Real Estate Federation (FIABCI) held in Bali from May 24 to 28, 2010.

According to FIABCI Asia Pacific’s website (www.fiabciprix.com), 54 properties from 11 countries were nominated for a series of categories. Contested categories include environment, master plan, sustainable development, public infrastructure, hotel, office, industrial estate and special categories.

Asia contributed the most nominees with up to 40 projects from eight countries, followed by Europe with 11 projects from two countries, and the US with two projects.

"There were more participants for 2010 compared with 2009 when there were 40 nominees for the 10 contested categories,” President of FIABCI Prix d'Excellence Awards 2010 Yeow Thit Sang remarked.

Heritage (Restoration/Conservation)

Loft-Quarter “Danilovskaya Manufacture 1897”, 1st stage, Moscow, Russia

The building was designed by Russian architect Ivan Kuznetsov in 1914 for storage of Danilovskaya Manufactory goods. The windows of the building are executed in “industrial” black colour with an authentic layout. The historical appearance of the building has been maintained during its reconstruction. All elements, both exterior and interior, available for retention have been left as they were. Careful restoration of the old and their harmonious combination with the new is the winning factor of Danilovskaya Manufacture.

Master Plan Category

Greater Springfield, Queensland, Australia

In an effort to promote photovoltaic power-generation and popularise the installation of building-integrated photovoltaic, the Taipei County Government came up with the Northern Taiwan Solar City project. The objective of the development is to integrate electricity generation, local scenery, recreation activities and education guidance. The project has also been weaved into local styles, moulding a sustainable and ecological environment that fulfils the concept of a domestic solar city.

Public Infrastructures/Amenities Category

Slum Upgrading Programme, Sao Paulo, Brazil

There are more than 1,600 favelas or slums in Sao Paulo, where millions of families live in inadequate conditions. Since 2005, the city municipality has been developing a programme to upgrade slums throughout all metropolitan regions, which has benefitted approximately 150,000 people. The aim of the programme has been to provide a better quality of life to the residents of slums in Sao Paulo. Problems related to infrastructure, accessibility, the availability of social facilities and public services, as well as providing local residents with decent homes were tackled head-on successfully.

Pan Pacific Suzhou (formerly known as Sheraton Suzhou Hotel and Towers), Suzhou, China

Chemical Research Building, Budapest, Hungary

The chemical works building of Gideon Richter Plc, a Central-Eastern-European multinational pharmaceutical company features an imposing Entrance Hall, which connects two wings of the building. The white sculpture-like bridges and the stairs seem to be “floating” in space. Both Gideon Richter and the architects wanted a high-quality building to house the R&D activities of the company. The success of the Chemical Research Building is also a victory for the host city Budapest. The project is the realisation of plans to revitalise the city’s industrial area.

Central, Singapore

Going against the norm and pushing boundaries. That has created something truly special in Adiva Parkhomes, Courtyard Terraces and Apartments, comprising 78 Parkhomes, 66 Courtyard Terraces and 16 Courtyard Apartments. The homes here are arranged in a non-linear fashion, meld with landscaped pocket parks, while the centrally located communal swimming pool, interlocking courtyards, meandering pathways, traffic-free spaces and streetscapes collaborate to define the place of homes. This integrated and value-added approach to Adiva has benefited its residents greatly.

Retail Category

Park Lane by CMP, Taichung, Taiwan

Park Lane was previously a half-abandoned building when it was acquired by Pu Jen Land Development. Located in the busiest commercial district in Taichung, Taiwan, it is well placed next to a major greenbelt and the Citizens Park. To integrate with the surrounding green fields, real plants were used as the building’s façade. The building design team worked with botanical experts to design special cultivating boxes that included adequate fertiliser and nutrition for the plants. Inspired by Park Lane, the Taichung City Government has passed a “Green Fence Plan” that requires every construction site to use real plants on its surrounding fences.

Specialised Project (Purpose Built) Category

Vorosmarty No. 1, Budapest, Hungary

Located at the Vorosmarty Square in the heart of Budapest, Vorosmarty No. 1 is a multifunctional building with retail, offices, penthouse duplexes and a winter garden in the centre of the building with full visual connection to the vibrant pedestrian life at the square. Designed by an architect who lives in Budapest, Gyorgy Fazakas understood the cultural essence of the city’s old structures. Vorosmarty No. 1, as a result, fits in the square’s differently styled historic buildings with its proportions.
