Peace for the soul

As our car turns and rolls cautiously down the steep slope and into the driveway of Amanjiwo resort, we are greeted by the sight of a circular, limestone building with a rising bell-shaped rotunda, supported by traditional Javanese-style concrete pillars. The structure is built with a grand sense of perspective and space, while its raw concrete stone reveals soul and character. Located on the fertile Kedu Plain of Central Java, Amanjiwo resort is surrounded by acres of lush rice fields and four volcanic mountains, the island’s most sacred, on the horizon — Merapi, Merbabu, Sumbing and Sindoro.

Amanjiwo, which means peaceful soul in Bahasa Indonesia, has the most unique architecture of the collection of hotels within the Amanresorts group. It draws inspiration from one of the largest Buddhist temple  complexes in the world — the mythical Borobudur, built during the Sailendra dynasty.

Amanresorts was founded by Adrian Zecha, a fl amboyant Indonesian-Czech-Dutch hotelier and deal maker with a reputation for being finicky about quality. He is also the chairman of General Hotel Management (GHM), and the older brother of Austen Zecha, a veteran in the advertising industry and president of TBWA\Tequila Malaysia. The Zechas grew up in a very privileged environment. The family built their wealth in  plantations but fled Indonesia when President Sukarno nationalised Dutch-owned enterprises.

In the 1970s, while brokering real estate deals, (Adrian) Zecha chanced upon the opportunity to take up a stake in Regent Hotels, one of Asia’s pioneer luxury hotel groups. This marked the start of his foray into the hospitality trade. A decade later, when holidaying in Phuket, he struck on the idea of building a small resort that is both exclusive and private.

Together with two friends and Anil Thadani, a private equity investor, they raised the money to build the first Aman property, Amanpuri, in 1988. In 2007, Zecha and DLF, one of India’s biggest real estate players, acquired a controlling interest in Amanresorts. The deal was worth US$400 million (about RM1.32 billion today).

Recently, there’s been speculation that DLF is in talks to dispose of or to reduce its interest in Amanresorts and focus on its core business. Khazanah Nasional had also entered into an agreement with Amanresorts to build a resort on a 46acre tract in Iskandar Malaysia by 2009, but there has been no news on its progress.

The Amanresorts group has 24 properties around the world, in far-fl ung locations like French Polynesia, Bhutan, Montenegro, and Turks and Caicos Islands. The latest to open is Amanfayun in Hangzhou and another Aman resort on a prime spot adjacent to the Summer Palace in Beijing.

On average, the properties have less than 40 rooms — a small inventory by industry standards. No two Aman resorts are alike, but they’re consistently rooted in the principles of minimalist style, and that ultimate luxury is not in lavishly expensive décor like opulent chandeliers and gold taps, but an experience. Amanjiwo embodies these qualities perfectly. One Zecha family member remarked, “There is something about that place.”

BOROBUDUR AND JAVANESE INFLUENCE

The central complex of Amanjiwo borrows from the  design of the grand central stupa located on the highest level of Borobudur. Its interior is sparse, like Borobudur’s central stupa, and does not have an ornate exterior (because it represents nirvana or liberation from desire and suff ering). The walls in Amanjiwo’s central complex are perforated with the shapes of rhombus, noticeably similar to the stupas on the second and third highest platform on the Borobudur.

The qi or energy flows down the slope in front of  the driveway, into the central building of Amanjiwo, and to the open dining room that overlooks rice field terraces, steep virgin terrain, and Borobudur in the distance, with hills forming the backdrop. The energy concentration is highest in the central complex, just like a traditional Javanese home, explains Sean Flakelar, the hotel’s general manager. The energy, combined with the austere-luxe décor, makes you feel like you are entering a different state of consciousness. All you feel is peace and serenity.

“There’s a lot of good healing energy here and I can see the effects on our guests. They’re stressed out and tired when they arrive. But when they leave, they look like a whole different person,” says Flakelar.

For this experience, a stay in a Borobudur pool suite in Amanjiwo, for instance, could cost you US$1,000 (RM3,203.50) a night.

The trees and shrubs growing in the garden are what you would find in Java. There are no flowering plants except for pink Nusa Indah flowers outside the bedrooms. Trees are planted instead of placing Buddha statues, and the use of fabric is kept to the minimum, staying true to the resort’s minimalist look. For instance, the bedroom can be screened off by sliding wooden panels instead of curtains.

The architect and designer of Amanjiwo is Ed Tuttle, an American, who counts the French and American elite among his clients. His notable hotel projects include Park Hyatt Paris Vendome and Park Hyatt Milano.

Other Aman properties which Tuttle had a hand in designing are Amanpuri (Thailand), Amankila (Indonesia), Amanjena (Morocco), and Amanbagh (India). Zecha has also worked with other architects like Kerry Hill and Jean-Michel Gathy on other properties.

DESIGN THAT RESPECTS THE ENVIRONMENT, COMMUNITY AND TRADITION

Respect for the environment is paramount, so the construction team had to find ways not to upset the forest ecosystem. “There was a lot of water from the run-off in front of the Menoreh Hills. The team diverted the river and allowed it to flow under the hotel so that it will feed into the farmland while not damaging the foundation,” says Flakelar.

The earthquake factor was another aspect that had to be considered in the construction. In 2006, the nearby Yogyakarta experienced a 6.3 magnitude earthquake. “We felt it but did not find structural damage. Th e building is wide and low to the ground, so it’s stable. A lot of
building material and concrete has been put into the foundation,” says Flakelar.

No resort is an island, so community outreach is another cornerstone of Amanresorts’ philosophy. Farmers attend to the rice fields on Amanjiwo’s property during the wet season and they grow tobacco during the dry season. “We buy vegetables from the farmers at local prices and don’t charge them for the use of the land. They make a living; we get the view and the nice cultivated land,” says Flakelar. And there’s no need for fences.

He explains, “Although we have 14 security guards patrolling the property, we work closely with the  villagers. If there’s anyone suspicious, they’re spotted straight away.”

Local Javanese materials were used for the construction of the resort, such as paras Jogja stone for the building, teak for flooring in the dining room, sungkai wood veneer panels and terrazzo flooring in the bedrooms. An unusual detail is the silver lay wallpaper on the ceiling of the main dining room, and the coppery, shimmering reflection of the teak fl ooring it creates. The dining tables are sculpted out of black terrazzo and the chairs are silver-painted rattan.

Silver, copper and marble are symbolically represented because they are commodities abundantly available in Java. Instead of using traditional Javanese-style stained glass, the designers used alabaster, a thin marble that allows light to filter in.

There are 35 suites arranged in a crescent formation around the central building, each separated by high limestone walls for privacy. Walking around the central building is like walking around Borobudur. Some suites offer a private pool, and are fitted with an outdoor bathtub. About half of the guests are from Jakarta and the region and on average, stay for three nights. Flakelar estimates that occupancy rate is about 4,000 nights a year.

The story and pictures have been extracted from the June-July 2010 issue of haven, a bi-monthly interior design and gardening magazine distributed free with a copy of The Edge Malaysia. haven is also published by The Edge Malaysia.
