Mario Botta, a renowned architect with a penchant of designing structures that are both modern yet blends with its cultural surroundings, was in Kuala Lumpur earlier this year to share with his devotees his architectural and design work.
At the talk organised by PAM (Malaysian Institute of Architects), he shared about his various projects around the world. Among those that stood out were the Cymbalista Synagogue in Israel; Kyobo Tower in Seoul, South Korea and the Tschuggen Bergose Spa in Arosa, Switzerland.
The Cymbalista Synagogue and Jewish Heritage Centre on the grounds of Tel Aviv University in Israel was completed in 1998. It was named after Paulette and Norberto Cymbalista whose mandate for Mario was to create “[a] place for prayer and a place for discussion: a synagogue and lecture hall, a place where the religious and the secular can meet.”
He accomplished this by designing two towers linked by a ground floor lobby. The squared-based foundation of the towers rise with both having a circular framed roof. The interesting element of this structure is how the ceiling of each room is square which allows natural light to enter through the curved spaces in the circular design of the towers.
The height of the structure is 44 feet. The exterior reddish stone is from the Dolomite Mountains in Italy, while the interior stone is from Tuscany, also in Italy. Other materials were sourced from Israel.
Meanwhile, the Kyobo Tower in Seoul, South Korea was described by Botta as a building that amalgamates strength and vulnerability in a structure where from one angle shows solidarity but another reveals the transparent heart in the form of glass sky bridges between two towers.
The building was completed in 2003 and stands at the corner of a major intersection in the city. Its reddish exterior stands in sharp contract to the rather bland surroundings making it a definite landmark for those living and working in the city. It sits on 1.67 acres and stands at a height of 384 ft. It has 25-storeys and eight underground levels.
Besides designing religious and commercial projects Mario has also designed a spa. Commissioned by Tschuggen Grand Hotel in Switzerland, he designed the Tschuggen Bergose Spa, a relaxation facility that is recessed at a base of a mountain. It was completed in 2006 and sits on 1.3 acres. The design had protruding “leaves” that reach out from the forest of trees that surround the facility. They allow daylight to enter in the day time and are lit during the night.
During winter when snow covers the land, the protruding “leaves” blend in looking like inverted icicles. In the summer, the silver-ish colour of the jutting structures breaks up the sea of green pines that cover the mountain.
The design of the facility caresses the gradient of the mountain hence interiorly there are terraced levels. A sky bridge links the spa and the hotel.
As Mario wax lyrical about his various projects throughout his lecture, one is taken by his passion for architecture. When asked how this passion has remained over his 67 years on the planet, his answer is simply that his work is also his hobby!
